Tempered Glass



Tempered glass is a toughened glass manufactured through regulated chemical or thermal treatmen.
This increases its strength compared to ordinary or annealed glass and as a result, tempered glass is
widely used as a safety glass. The process of tempering compresses the outer surface while putting theinner surfaces into tension.

Tempered glass is made by placing annealed glass onto a roller table then taking it through a very hot
furnace of degrees of up to 650 °C. This is to ensure it heats above its transition temperature of about 564 °C to 620 °C. Rapid cooling is done on the glass with forced air while the inner parts still flow for some time. Alternatively, a chemical toughening process can be used. A surface layer of thin glass (0.1 mm thick) is compressed by ion exchange of sodium ions present in the glass with potassium ions. Potassium ions are thirty percentage larger than the sodium ions. Ion exchange takes place when the annealed glass is immersed into molten potassium nitrate. Tempered glass manufactured through chemical toughening are stronger than thermally tempered glass and is thus recommended for glass objects of complex shapes of Tempered glass . Where is the tempered glass used?
